Ice Hockey Equipment - A Look Through History

The first emergence of ice hockey equipment was a good deal more rudimentary than the highly specialised equipment utilised today. For example, the first ice hockey skates consisted of a normal pair of shoes with simple metal blades tied to the bottom. In addition to this, the ice hockey sticks used up until the 1930’s were nothing more than thin pieces of wood; which is certainly a far cry from the technological advanced and expertly designed ice hockey equipment that can be found in stores today. The main reason that ice hockey equipment underwent a dramatic overhaul was as a result of safety concerns. Ice hockey is a very competitive sport and it is important that ice hockey equipment provides players with the protection they require.

Ice Hockey Equipment - Protective Measures

Essentially, the only pieces of ice hockey equipment which aren’t protective in nature are the hockey puck and the ice hockey sticks. Just some of the ice hockey equipment worn by players to keep themselves safe on the ice includes:

·       Hockey Helmet - A vital piece of ice hockey equipment. Provides crucial protection to the face from wayward pucks and stick swings.
·       Ice Hockey Gloves - These protect the fingers and hands from injury which is why they are a must have piece of ice hockey equipment. Whilst bulky in nature they do allow players a considerable amount of movement.
·       Ice Hockey Skates - Fortunately, ice hockey skates have come on leaps and bounds since the early days and now offer players significant protection from injury. They are reinforced with metal mesh to ensure blades don’t cut through and cause injury.
